3-star tattoo on arm helps nab man 7 years after murder | India News

MUMBAI: Over seven years after the body of a man had been found in a sack dumped in Nalasopara, the key accused in the murder was arrested from Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. An old tattoo on the right hand of the accused and a decade-old blurred photograph of his helped the police nab him from Rajapur town of Chitrakoot district.
The accused, Shivbabu Nishad (28), has been sent to police custody. He was accused of strangling a 21-year-old man Subhashchandra Gupta, robbing his valuables and disposing of his body in a gunny bag between March 17 and 18 of 2016 in Nalasopara (east).
Nishad’s accomplices — Ravi Dangur, Abhijeet Mishra and another who was a minor at the time the crime was committed had been arrested for the murder. They are out on bail and the case is in court. Nishad, who was then 20 years of age and had then been identified as only ‘Shiva bhaiyya’, was named as the prime suspect in the case registered at Tulinj police station. His address was unknown.
While probing pending cases, the Vasai crime branch unit 2 received a tip-off that the accused was in UP. The police got hold of a blurred photograph of the accused, possibly taken in 2013. The photograph showed his full name tattooed on the right hand along with four stars on the arm, said senior inspector Sahuraj Ranaware. The photo was shared with their counterparts at Shardua police station in the northern state.
Investigations revealed that Nishad had removed the tattoo of his name, but had retained three of the stars on his arm, as in the photo. Based on the tattoo, the police detained Nishad. In the past seven years, he had also got a tattoo of his wife. A crime branch team travelled to UP and questioned him. He confessed to having committed the murder in 2016.
