29 Covid deaths in a day, highest in 7 months | India News

India reported 29 fresh Covid-19 fatalities from 14 states/UTs, highest since September 2022, with addition of 12,591 new cases in a day, the highest in nearly eight months. Delhi alone reported six deaths due to the disease, followed by four each in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
On Wednesday, the country had recorded 27 Covid-19 deaths. The total death toll due to the Covid-19 pandemic has increased to 5,31,230 with Thursday’s 40 fatalities, including 11 deaths reconciled by Kerala.
Majority of the deaths can be attributed to pre-existing illnesses like tuberculosis and cancer, said Dr Suresh Kumar, medical director of Delhi’s Lok Nayak Hospital.
There has been a surge in Covid-19 cases across the country since March. Currently, data shared by the government show the positivity rate at well above 5%. About 2.30 lakh tests were conducted in the last 24 hours. Kerala, Delhi and Maharashtra are among the worst affected states/UTs, officials said.
Recently, principal secretary to PM, P K Mishra, chaired a meeting to assess the Covid-19 situation in the country. The meeting focussed on the status of preparedness of health infrastructure, logistics, drugs and vaccination campaign in the country.
He stressed on managing localised surges it is essential that sufficient health infrastructure should be available at sub-district level.
