2 Uttarakhand women fight off tiger to save friend | India News

PITHORAGARH: Two women rescued their friend from certain death by fighting off a tiger that had attacked her in Boon forest range of Champawat district on Tuesday afternoon. Geeta Devi, 36, was gathering fodder with Janki Devi, 36, and Parvati Devi, 37, when the big cat ambushed her.
Boon forest ranger Gulzar Hussain said, “The tiger pounced on Geeta and dragged her about 40 metres towards the forest.Janki and Parvati responded swiftly, fighting back the big cat with sticks and sickles and later pelting it with stones in desperation. Their efforts eventually forced the tiger to retreat into the dense forest, leaving a grievously injured Geeta behind.”
Geeta, bleeding profusely and nearly unconscious, was taken to a hospital in Tanakpur, where she is out of danger.Rescued from a tiger attack by two women friends in the Boon forests of Uttarakhand’s Champawat district, Geeta Devi is currently recuperating in hospital. “She sustained injuries to her head and received 24 stitches. But she is out of danger now,” said Dr Mohammad Aftab Alam at a hospital in Tanakpur. He later referred Geeta to a higher medical centre in Haldwani for a CT scan and further treatment.
Boon forest ranger Gulzar Hussain, lauding the bravery and presence of mind of the two women, Janki and Parvati, confirmed the presence of a tiger in the area. As a precautionary measure, the forest officer has advised villagers not to enter the jungle in the coming days. Patrolling in the area has also been intensified.
