[ad_1]

NEW DELHI: At a time when states, particularly from the south, are demanding a higher share of taxes, the 16th Finance Commission started work on preparing the roadmap for sharing of resources for five years, starting April 2026. The 16th Finance Commission, headed by economist Arvind Panagariya, held its first meeting here on Wednesday.
Unlike some of its predecessors, the current commission has been given an open canvas with only what is provided in the Constitution given as the mandate with even the census, which is used as the base for population related calculations, not mentioned in the terms of reference.
The panel will hold wide ranging consultations over 18-20 months, which will include those with the states and other agencies before finalising its recommendations by Oct-end 2025, an official statement said.
