Taylor Lautner is looking back at the infamous MTV Video Music Awards moment with then-girlfriend Taylor Swift.

During the Wednesday (February 1) episode of his podcast The Squeeze with wife Tay Dome, the 30-year-old Twilight actor revisited the 2009 VMAs when Kanye West hopped on stage and interrupted the 33-year-old singer’s acceptance speech, admitting he originally thought the whole thing was a “skit.”

When asked by his new wife which career moment he would chose to relive, Lautner responded, “Probably the 2009 VMAs when I presented the award to Taylor. I was unaware that the Kanye thing was not a skit.”

During the awards show back in September 2009, Lautner presented the Best Female Video award to Swift for her “You Belong with Me” music video. At the time, Lautner and Swift had just started dating.

Just as Swift began her acceptance speech, Kanye, 45, rushed on stage and took the mic from her, declaring that Beyonce should have won the award instead.

“Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’mma let you finish. But Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time [with ‘Single Ladies’]! One of the best videos of all time,” Kanye proclaimed.

“Yeah [we had just gone public with our relationship] and I presented the award to her, so I gave her the award [and] I took five steps back and was standing five feet behind her,” Lautner recalled. “In the middle of giving her thank-you speech, Kanye jumps up onto the stage.”

He continued, “I can barely hear it. I can’t see them. I’m just assuming that this whole thing was a practiced and rehearsed skit because why else would Kanye West be jumping up on the stage, interrupting Taylor Swift? It just didn’t make sense.”

After Kanye shrugged his shoulders and handed the mic back to Swift, Lautner then realized that this wasn’t some sort of joke.

“He jumped off, she finished [and] the second she turned back around and I saw her face for the first time, I was like, ‘Oh. No, that wasn’t good,’” Lautner recalled.

When Beyonce, 41, won Video of the Year for “Single Ladies” later in the night at the 2009 VMAs, she invited Swift back on stage to finish her acceptance speech.

Several years ago, Lautner opened up about his relationship with Swift, revealing which of her songs was written about him.
