Savarkar: Pawar praises Savarkar, says he had a ‘scientific outlook’ | India News

NAGPUR: NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday said Vinayak ‘Veer’ Savarkar had a “scientific outlook and was a progressive” and added the political controversy over Rahul Gandhi’s comments on Savarkar was distracting people from other serious issues. Pawar added that in the past, he too had made certain comments about Savarakar, but they were specifically about the Hindu Mahasabha, of which Savarkar was a leader.
Calling Savarkar a very progressive neta of his time, Pawar said, “He built a temple in front of his house and its responsibility was given to a member of the Valmiki community,” he added.
Pawar’s comments came in the wake of Shiv Sena (UBT) saying it would not tolerate Rahul Gandhi’s comments on Savarkar and Pawar himself flagging it as a contentious issue at a meeting of opposition parties earlier in the week. Rahul has accused Savarkar of cowardice, saying he had apologised to the British to secure his freedom. “I am not Savarkar, I am a Gandhi,” he had said after his disqualification from Lok Sabha. But after Pawar’s nudge, Rahul said he would “respect sentiments” of allies.
With BJP still mounting pressure on Rahu by demanding an apology, Pawar said “Savarkar is not a national issue as of today. There are so many challenges the country is facing presently, they need everyone’s attention,” he said.
Pawar said BJP should not make Rahul’s comments a big issue. “Even during Manmohan Singh’s tenure as PM such statements were made. It should be looked at in a constructive manner,” he said.
On MVA’s scheduled meeting on Sunday in Sambhajinagar, where violence took place on Thursday, Pawar said everyone must follow the police’s directives. “I have heard that police have granted permission, so the meeting should go ahead as planned,” he said.
