CHENNAI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested Bhaskaran, father-in-law of Jaya TV CEO Vivek Jayaraman, in Chennai on Saturday in connection with a red sanders smuggling case, reports Venkadesan S. Bhaskaran is the fourth person to be arrested in the case. Based on a tip-off, DRI officials rushed to the accused’s house in Anna Nagar and detained him on Friday. After interrogation, he was arrested and remanded in judicial custody by a local court on Saturday.
The case pertains to the attempt to smuggle 12 tonnes of red sanders logs abroad via sea port. DRI officials thwarted the bid and arrested the suspects, who are now in judicial custody, but Bhaskaran had been evading them.
Bhaskaran is better known as ‘Katta’ Bhaskaran as he is notorious for red sanders smuggling. He already has two cases pending against him with the DRI, Hyderabad and was earlier arrested by Andhra Pradesh special task force on the same charges.
His daughter got married to Jaya TV CEO Vivek Jayaraman, nephew of VK Sasikala, in 2016.
