JAMMU: The death toll in the Upper Dhangri terrorist attack in Jammu’s Rajouri district rose to seven Sunday as a man with multiple bullet wounds died after a week in hospital, while Indian troops guarding the border foiled an infiltration attempt by killing two heavily armed Pakistani terrorists in a nightly operation along the LoC in the Balakote sector of Poonch.
Prince Sharma, 36, was among six critically wounded villagers after terrorists barged into three adjacent Hindu homes in Upper Dhangri village and emptied several rounds from semiautomatics on the evening of January 1, leaving four people dead that day.
The terrorists left behind IEDs near one of the three houses, one of which exploded and killed two children the next morning. The explosion wounded nine people, mostly women and children, who are now being treated in hospital.
Prince Sharma’s younger brother Deepak Kumar, 23, was among the four victims of the New Year’s Day shooting. Prince died at Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu.
Amid a massive search to nab the assailants, soldiers shot dead two Pakistani terrorists trying to sneak into the Balakote sector through the fenced-off LoC. A cache of AK-47 rifles, pistols, bullets, dry military-style ration, night goggles, and winter clothing was found on them.
Brig R Krishnan said the troops noticed “suspicious movements” on Saturday night and a landmine went off around 7.45pm, giving off the presence of people near the fence. It took the soldiers some time to locate the terrorists because of frosty and foggy weather, and the craggy terrain that has “dense undergrowth and is also heavily mined”.
After getting the coordinates through night-vision devices, the soldiers shot dead two terrorists. A search was conducted after daybreak.
Security has been heightened in the Jammu region following the Upper Dhangri attack, considered one of the bloodiest in Rajouri and comparable to some of the deadliest targeted massacres in three decades of separatist insurgency in J&K. At least 18 suspects have been detained for questioning after the attack.
