NEW DELHI: Aiming to replace the existing toilets in trains with newly designed and upgraded ones with better amenities, the Indian Railways has introduced an AC coach with four newly designed bio-toilets in Ranchi Rajdhani as a pilot. After getting feedback, the national transporter plans to roll them out across trains.
These toilets are equipped with automatic hygiene and odour control systems. Water taps and soap dispensers are also touch free sensor-based systems. Officials said special care has been taken to ensure these can’t be stolen. Besides washrooms, the doorways and gangways have also been remodelled to provide improved facilities during the train journey.
The railways receive maximum complaints against toilets and these are primarily for hygiene, bad odour and malfunctioning. “All these problems have been addressed in the newly designed systems,” said an official.
Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had visited New Delhi station in January to inspect the new upgraded version of toilets and he had instructed officials to replace the existing ones with the modern toilets in all coaches.
Sources said in the first phase, all toilets in Rajdhani trains would be replaced with the upgraded ones and subsequently these will be introduced in other mail and express trains in a phased manner. The estimated cost of each remodelled toilet is around Rs 2.5 lakh.
Vaishnaw had directed railway officers to install these new design toilets in 6,000 coaches per year.
