BHOPAL/JABALPUR: A dealer who allegedly purchased scrap from thieves foraging through abandoned mines of South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) in Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol has been arrested, days after seven such pilferers died in the pits.
The arrest of scrap trader Pappu Topi came within hours of the police announcing a cash reward of Rs 10,000 on him. Pappu allegedly bought scrap from the seven deceased — all locals — who had entered the mines in Dhanpuri area.
“Pappu’s illegal construction was also razed to the ground by the police. This is the third arrest of a scrap dealer in connection with the Dhanpuri incident. A drive has been launched against illegal scrap dealers,” Shahdol SP Kumar Prateek told TOI. An FIR has also been registered against the management of the government-owned SECL.
