Indore temple tragedy: ‘Couldn’t understand what was happening’ | India News

INDORE: Vedic chants of the havan were suddenly interrupted by a loud crack. The devotees sitting around the yajna looked around for a split second, puzzled. The next moment, their world collapsed around them. The ‘floor’ they were sitting on caved in, sending them plunging into a deep well that held 25 feet of stinking, muddy water.
“We couldn’t understand what happened. I saw some people falling with folded hands,” said a witness to the horror, who survived.
Newly-weds Akash Motwani (25) and Manisha (22) were attending the havan as a couple from Sadhu Waswani Nagar. Akash’s sister Karishma was accompanying them. All of them fell. Akash was rescued an hour later. “I tried to rescue Manisha and Karishma. But could not,” wailed Akash.
Pushkar Patel, a resident of Sneh Nagar, was the first one to reach the stepwell after hearing the screams. He called the police and local administration. “I could see the backs of women clinging to mangled iron. We helped the people we could reach. We threw ropes to pull them up,” Patel told TOI.
