Indira Gandhi dismissed elected state govts 50 times, Congress troubled every regional leader: PM Modi | India News

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on Thursday at the receiving end of opposition sloganeering over Adani during his speech in Rajya Sabha, tried to remind the regional parties how the Congress used to trouble them in the past with Article 356.
Article 356 deals with the imposition of President’s rule in states.
“Indira Gandhi ‘misused’ Article 356 of Constitution 50 times to dismiss elected state governments,” PM Modi said in his reply to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address in the Upper House.
Taking a dig at the regional parties for standing with the Congress, PM Modi said, “Look at history, which party and people in power misused Article 356 the most? Elected governments were toppled 90 times, who were those who did that? A Prime minister used Article 356 fifty times, and scored a half-century and that name is Indira Gandhi. In Kerala Communist government was elected which wasn’t liked by Pandit Nehru and was toppled.”
“In Tamil Nadu too, governments of veterans like MGR and Karunanidhi were dismissed by Congress people. Sharad Pawar’s government was toppled too. We have seen what happened with NTR when he was in the US for treatment and attempts were made to topple his government. This was the level of Congress’ politics. They troubled every regional leader,” he added.
The Congress is trying to forge an alliance with the regional parties to take on the BJP-led NDA in the 2024 Lok Sabha battle.
Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra saw several regional leaders share stage with the Congress leader.
To capitalise on Rahul’s marathon walkathon effort, the Congress had invited 21 parties for the concluding ceremony of the yatra in Kashmir. However, several of them did not turn up for the event.
With Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao taking ahead his national ambitions and several key leaders like Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal, Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati keeping an arm’s distance from the Congress, the grand old party already has an uphill task at hand when it comes to uniting the opposition.
‘Even to shout slogans, opposition has to take turns’
While the PM continued with his speech unperturbed by opposition’s sloganeering over Adani, he did launch a broadside at them.
Accusing the opposition parties of playing political games to save themselves, PM Modi declared that he lives for the country and wants to do something for the country and this has rattled the opposition.
“Ek conviction ke karan chala hoon, desh ke liye jeeta hoon, desh ke liye kuch karne ke liye nikla hoon (I live for the country and have embarked with the conviction to serve the nation),” he said
He said the opposition lacks courage to take him on and hence levels false allegations.
“Desh dekh raha hai, ek akela kitno ko bhari padh raha hai (the country is watching how one person has outweighed so many),” he said as the opposition members kept shouting “Modi-Adani bhai-bhai”.
Towards the end of his speech, he took a dig at the opposition parties and said even to shout slogans against him they have to take turns.
