LUCKNOW: With 80 crore internet users and demographic dividend, India attempted to push the world to become one market for lateral hiring at G20’s digital economy working group (DEWG) conference which culminated on Wednesday.
After the delegates unanimously agreed over the need for digital public infrastructure and digital skilling, Indian representatives went further and mooted an idea to create a framework for mutual recognition of digital skills and centre of excellence, an online platform for mapping the skills of different countries, so that organizations can source out manpower as per their requirement.
Elaborating on the idea, additional secretary, ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY), Bhuvnesh Kumar said, “In each country, there should be a framework which could help everyone understand that an individual with a particular qualification or a particular course in a country is equivalent to qualification of a candidate or course in another country. This could help in lateral movement of labour.”
“Every country of G20 can share input on an online platform. In that way, lateral hiring will become reality and the world will become one market. Anybody sitting in Ireland can hire in India and vice versa to source out manpower as per requirement. However, the delegates believed that it’s complicated. So, we mooted to at least create a roadmap. We are not talking about framework but a roadmap where experience can be shared. One can take inspiration from 27 countries of the European Union,” said Kumar.
The delegates agreed on having a roadmap. Now, India will further discuss the idea in the next meeting which is scheduled at Pune in April and further in Hyderabad in June and Bengaluru in August.
Meanwhile, Alkesh Kumar Sharma, secretary, MeitY, said, “Delegates who participated in DEWG were thrilled and lauded Lucknow as well the state for the hospitality, rich culture, food and smiling nature.”
“The takeaway from the three-day meet was to build digital public infrastructure, cyber security in the digital economy and digital skilling,” he added.
