LONDON: UK PM Rishi Sunak says that despite all the difficulties he knew he would face as PM, he took the role up because he felt it was his “dharma” to help the country.
In an interview with “Piers Morgan Uncensored” on Thursday night to mark the 100th day of his premiership, Sunak was asked why he wanted to become PM when Europe was at war, the pound tanking, his party plummeting in the polls, and Britain in an economic crisis. He said: “I wasn’t thinking about politics when Liz Truss resigned. . . I had moved on. . . I believe in public service and felt sense of duty more than anything else… There is a concept in Hinduism called ‘dharma’, which roughly translates into duty, and that is how I was raised,” he said. “It was about doing things expected of you and trying to do the right thing. Even though it was going to be anightmare job, I felt like I could make a difference and I was the best person to make a difference at that moment, given the challenges people were facing, and that’s ultimately why I put myself forward to do it knowing it would be difficult and challenging. . . ”
Sunak also recounted how he proposed to his wife Akshata Murty by bending down on one knee when they were alone walking along the cliffs in Half Moon Bay in California before staying in a fancy hotel they had dreamt of staying in as students. When asked “what love is” he said: “There are lots of different aspects to it — the bit I am most focused on right now is the support Akshata gives me doing this job. I couldn’t do this job without her love and support. ”
He refused to answer whether he was a billionaire, preferring to describe himself as “financially fortunate” and promising to release his tax returns soon for all to see.
“People need to understand what my values are. I was brought up by parents who emigrated to this country with an immigrant mindset where what they were focused on was working as hard as possible and sacrificing everything so that their kids could have a better future and we could fit in and integrate into British life well, and that is how I was raised — to work hard, do the right thing and look after people less fortunate than myself. Those are the values I bring to this job,” he said.
Morgan asked if Sunak, a Star Wars fan who does not drink or smoke, was a nerd. Sunak said if that meant that “someone getting up early, working hard on top of things and trying to solve problems and giving everything they have got, then sure that is who I am. That is what the PM should be. ”
