RAIPUR: Lashing out at the Modi government and BJP for rising hate and polarisation, and raising concern that “democracy is on the verge of being expunged from India”, Congress on Saturday promised it will bring a “new law to prevent and punish hate crimes” and also a law to “prohibit discrimination on the basis of religion, gender, caste and language in supply of goods and services like housing, hostels, hotels, clubs”.
The party also promised a constitutional amendment to eliminate mass defections, as it targeted BJP for “purchasing” legislators to topple state governments. The announcements are part of the political resolution passed by the Congress plenary and is akin to an election promise. It promised to prepare a “Vision Document for 2024”.

Bharat Jodo Yatra was like sunshine for the nation amid darkness: Mallikarjun Kharge

The promise of new laws on hate ups the tone of Congress attack on BJP, indicating that the party is willing to build on the principal theme of Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’. Former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi said she was gratified that “my innings” (as president) concluded with ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’. She made remarks after the plenary adopted a resolution thanking her for her long presidentship of the party. While Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge blamed BJP for “the prevailing atmosphere of hatred and fear”, Sonia said, “BJP is fuelling the fire of hatred. ”
The Congress brass repeated its stock attack line of the Modi government capturing the institutions, attacking judiciary, and misusing agencies like ED and CBI to harass the Opposition. The political resolution said “the politics ofhate has assumed alarming proportions and religious polarisation has reached its peak” while “hate crimes and atrocities have increased manifold”. “Vigilante rightwing groups incite violence on trivial issues and operate with impunity, and have started acting like police, spreading anarchy and fear. ” Kharge and Sonia both attacked PM Modi over the Adani issue, and spoke about rising “cronyism”.

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi said on Saturday she was happy that her innings “could conclude with the Bharat Jodo Yatra”, calling Rahul Gandhi’s march “a turning point” for the party. It triggered speculation that she was hinting at retiring from active politics but party leaders denied it. Asserting that Yatra has “renewed the rich legacy of dialogue between the Congress party and the people” through mass-contact programmes, she said, “It has shown all of us that Congress stands with the people and is ready to fight for them.” Rahul Gandhi’s determination and leadership were crucial to the yatra’s success, she said.
