RAIPUR: A security force operation seems to have come close to Maoist military commander Hidma, mastermind of some of the most brutal massacres in Bastar, but he escaped yet again. A woman Maoist was killed in the operation near the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border on January 11 this year.
Rumours of Hidma’s death in an operation have been circulating for the past three-four days. Police had denied it, and now Maoists have issued a statement that the insurgents have “foiled a surgical strike ordered by Union home minister Amit Shah”. They alleged that the elite National Security Guards (NSG) were involved in the operation.
The information that Maoist battalion commander Madvi Hidma was killed in the encounter is fake, said a statement issued by Maoist spokesperson Samta. The Maoists have issued photos of the alleged “air strike”. “January 11, 2023, has become another black day in the history of Chhattisgarh when villages located on borders of Sukma and Bijapur came under bomb shelling, air strikes via drones and helicopters. A new operation called ‘surgical strike’ was launched using air force and National Security Guard commandos. They fired indiscriminately from choppers and our cadres retaliated, injuring six jawans and defeating their purpose of surgical strike,” the Maoist statement said, adding that PLGA member Pottam Hungi was killed.
Maoists of South sub-zonal committee said the “aerial firing” went on from 11am to 4pm, and people working in fields “ran for their life”. This is the third “bombing” of Bastar after operations in April 2021 and April 2022, the Maoists claimed, adding that it was a plot to “hand over the natural region to corporate houses”.
Bastar range IG P Sundarraj refuted all the claims and said: “The Maoist statement appears to be one of a series of such attempts by Maoists to mislead the native population and cover up the fact that they are losing ground rapidly and the morale of their cadres is shaken.”
