901 honoured with police medals, CRPF tally highest at 111 | India News

NEW DELHI: Nine out of every 10 gallantry medals awarded to police forces across the country on Republic Day eve this year have gone to personnel who valiantly fought either Left-wing extremism in different states or terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
Overall, 901 police personnel from various state and Union territory police forces, Central para-military forces and Central police organisations were approved for police medals across three categories on Wednesday. These include 140 police medal for gallantry (PMG), 93 President’s police medal for distinguished service (PPM) and 668 President’s medal for meritorious service (PM).
CRPF, the country’s largest Central para-military force, will walk away with the maximum police medals (111, or 12% of the total 901 medals) across three categories – PMG, PPM and PM. UP Police was picked for a total 79 medals, Maharashtra police for 74, BSF for 59, CISF for 28, Intelligence Bureau for 34 and CBI for 30.
As many as 16 personnel – including 14 from the CRPF and one each from Chhattisgarh police and Assam Rifles – were selected posthumously for the gallantry honour this year. While 10 of the 14 CRPF PMG awardees were martyred in 2016 in an anti-Naxal operation in Gaya-Aurangabad, Bihar, after which bodies of 3 Maoists were discovered, the remaining four made the supreme sacrifice while resisting Maoists at Bijapur, Chhattisgarh in 2018.
For yet another year in a row, no President’s police medal for gallantry (PPMG) has been announced.
The 140 police gallantry medals approved on Wednesday are shared by just seven of the country’s 35 state/UT police and four Central para-military forces. While CRPF personnel received 48 or 34% of the total 140 gallantry medals awarded, Maharashtra police led the states with 31 medals; followed by J&K police with 25; Jharkhand police with 9; Delhi police, Chhattisgarh police and BSF with 7 medals each; and Madhya Pradesh police with four. Assam Rifles and CISF secured one gallantry medal each.
As many as 80 police personnel, constituting 57% of all gallantry awardees, were honoured for acts of bravery in Left-wing extremism-hit areas. These include 19 personnel of the Maharashtra police who, in an anti-Naxal operation in Gadchiroli on May 21, 2021, killed 13 hardcore Maoists including the mastermind of a May 2019 ambush in the same district that had left 15 policemen martyred. Another 45 personnel – among them, six from a CRPF quick action team who neutralised A++ category LeT terrorist Saifullah Daniyal in Srinagar on October 12, 2020 from close quarters — were conferred the police gallantry medal for operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
CRPF Second-in-command P R Mishra has been named for his eighth gallantry medal — PMG that follows a Shaurya Chakra, 1 PPMG and 5 PMGs — for an operation in Khunti, Jharkhand in 2020 that led to the killing of dreaded Maoist Jidan Guria. Guria carried a Rs 15 lakh reward and was wanted in 152 criminal cases.
Among the gallantry award winners in J&K police are Inspector Amjad Hussain Mir, assistant sub-inspector Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat and head constable Asgar Ali, who in a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Kakapora, Pulwama on April 2, 2021, killed three local terrorists while ruling out any collateral damage by evacuating civilians from the encounter site. Six BSF personnel led by SI Paotinsat Guite who killed three Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists along the LoC in J&K were also honoured for gallantry. Guite, fatally injured during the ambush, has been awarded the Kirti Chakra.
CISF head constable Rajesh Singh was honoured with PMG for having disarmed and overpowered a colleague in 2017 at CISF unit NPGCL Nabinagar, Bihar, after the latter went rogue, firing from his weapon and killing four other personnel. Singh was unarmed at the time.
Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG) is awarded on the ground of conspicuous gallantry in saving life and property, or in preventing crime or arresting criminals. President’s police medal for distinguished service (PPM) is awarded for special distinguished record in police service and police medal for meritorious service (PM) is awarded for valuable service characterized by resource and devotion to duty.
